The Complete Guide to Your First Powerlifting Meet

Competing in your first powerlifting meet is one of the most rewarding experiences in strength sport. The energy in the room is unlike anything you have felt in training. This guide covers everything from signing up to walking off the platform with your best total.

Choosing Your Meet

Start with a local or regional meet. Look for IPF-affiliated federations in India -- Powerlifting Federation of India (PFI) runs meets across the country. Check the equipment rules before you register -- raw, classic, and equipped categories all have different gear requirements.

Equipment Check

Every piece of competition gear must be federation-approved. Your belt, knee sleeves, singlet, and shoes will all be checked before you lift. Pull out your gear list two weeks before the meet and verify every item. IPF-approved equipment is clearly marked -- do not show up with non-approved kit.

Attempt Selection

This is where meets are won and lost. Your opener should be something you can triple on a bad day -- about 90 to 93% of your projected max. Second attempt is your target -- typically 97 to 100% of a realistic max. Third is for records or PRs only if attempts one and two went perfectly.

Weight Cutting

For your first meet, compete at your natural training weight. Aggressive water cuts are for experienced competitors who know exactly how their body responds. Competing slightly above your class is fine -- showing up depleted for your first meet will ruin the experience.

Meet Day Nutrition

Eat what you eat on any hard training day. Do not experiment with new foods. Bring snacks you trust -- fruit, rice cakes, your usual protein. Weigh in, rehydrate, eat a normal meal, and trust your preparation.
